Mike Brodie: Sidestepping the Digital Demimonde
November 10, 2013 Self-promotion online may be the norm, but not all digital-age creators are prepared for recognition. Born in 1985, Mike Brodie, a.k.a. the Polaroid Kidd, first picked up a camera at 17, shortly before he hopped his first freight train. He rode away from his home in Pensacola, Fla., making it only as far as Jacksonville, snapping maybe five photos. He was hooked. For the next seven or so years, Mr. Brodie crisscrossed the country, living on trains, taking photos of his fellow hobos. On Polaroids and later 35 millimeter, they are artfully posed and romantically hued images of life on the smudgy social edges. Read more

A keen shutter Reflex from Mike Brodie at Wirtz
October 4, 2013 Merely to say that unschooled Oakland photographer Mike Brodie has an eye would understate the richness of the work he shows at Wirtz. Parts of a series Brodie calls "A Period of Juvenile Prosperity," these pictures record his penniless early 20s experience in the last decade, riding freight trains and hitchhiking around the country, sleeping rough and scavenging for food with a changing cohort of young drifters. Almost no trace remains in Brodie's pictures of riding the rails as a mid-20th century dream of freedom. Some of his fellow travelers wear nothing-to-lose face tattoos. All seem to accept grime as the natural patina of railroad nomads' life. Read more -

Tête a tête, in its third iteration, includes photography and video by artists from Africa and the United States. The works in this exhibition presents itself with visual complexity and conceptual ideologies through myth, performance, literature and self, as pertained to the “black body” as we consider it in today’s society. Jehad Nga: New Work, Mali and Libya at Bonni Benrubi Gallery May 29 - July 12, 2013
May 25, 2013 Bonni Benrubi Gallery is pleased to present new work from Mali and Libya by acclaimed artist Jehad Nga. This new body of work by Nga once again strikes a powerful aesthetic balance between the personal and the political; the emotive and the pragmatic; the humane and the inhumane. In his stark minimalist images, Nga turns his decades long exploration of the people and cultures of Northern Africa into a quiet meditation on life and community in these uniquely challenging countries. Los Angeles Times, reFramed: In conversation with Mike Brodie
April 8, 2013 Born 1985 in Arizona, Mike Brodie began photographing in 2004 when he was given a Polaroid camera. Working under the moniker, The Polaroid Kidd, Brodie spent the next four years circumambulating the U.S., amassing an archive that would go on to become one of the few true collections of American travel photography. Having never undergone any formal training, he chose to remain untethered to the pressures and expectations of the art market. Read more -

The show, now its 33rd year, filled the Park Avenue Armory last weekend with works from the likes of Irving Penn, Bill Brandt, Hendrik Kerstens, as well as W contributors like Alex Prager and Rineke Dijkstra. The New York Times: AIPAD Photography Show features M+B Gallery's Booth with Matthew Brandt
April 4, 2013 A big chunk of the history of photography is represented, although haphazardly, by the 82 dealers making up this year's Association of International Photography Art Dealers Show. At Hans P. Kraus Jr.'s booth, you can see the earliest photographic image of a whole human being: a paper negative and its positive print picturing a footman holding open a carriage door, made in 1840 by William Henry Fox Talbot. Kraus also has a pair of large photogravures of the Moon's surface, shot from the Paris Observatory in 1895 by Maurice Loewy and Pierre Henri Puiseux. Read more

The Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado invites Mona Kuhn to judge and curate an upcoming exhibition: (Un)Clothed
March 28, 2013 Mona Kuhn is an internationally acclaimed artist. Kuhn photographs beautiful nudes that are not simply about being naked. They are about the body being a residence of who we are as human beings. Kuhn portrays the complexities of human nature, both tempting and provoking the viewer’s imagination. Her body of work includes images from a French naturist colony and her birthplace of Brazil where she returned after a 20 year absence. She has exhibited extensively in the United States, Europe, and South America. Steidl published her past two monographs Photographs (2004), Evidence (2007), Native (2009), as well as her most recent Bordeaux Series (2011). Her work is held in collections such as the Griffin Museum, Massachusetts; the Miami Art Museum, Florida; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; the Sir Elton John Collection, England; and the Buhl Foundation, New York. Mike Brodie's "A Period of Juvenile Prosperity" featured in TIME's LightBox
March 4, 2013 Mike Brodie is easy to mythologize. A teenager-turned-supertramp (a term usually used to describe youth eager to travel by whatever means and for as little money as possible) Brodie became a darling of the photography world after carting an old Polaroid SX-70 and some stale bagels on his first train-hopping experience across the United States. Mike Brodie's "A Period of Juvenile Prosperity" featured in The New Yorker's PHOTO BOOTH
January 29, 2013 Mike Brodie says that he never really wanted to be an artist. But he’s travelled over fifty thousand miles by train, lived with an underground rock band in Philadelphia and with vegans in Portland, and photographed it all. His images—of trains with the earth flying by, of a tender sleeping embrace—are touching and terrifying, exciting and raw. This work will be released as Brodie’s first book, “A Period of Juvenile Prosperity,” by Twin Palms Publishers and TBW Books, on March 1st. He will also have two concurrent exhibits in March, one at Yossi Milo Gallery, in New York, and one at M + B, in Los Angeles, and book signings on March 8th, at Dashwood Books in New York, and March 17th, at Family Books in Los Angeles.
